Principles forlandscaping:

“Right Plant, Right Place, Right Time” – Know your plant’s needs. Don’t try to grow something that likes deep shade in a full sun location. Don’t try to plant a water loving plant in fast draining, sandy conditions, and so on. Consider your orientation – is your area facing the South? If facing south, you can almost always count on full sun exposure year round unless there are obstacles hindering the sun.

“The “weed” tells the story” –what’s growing says what conditions you have, indicating what else you can grow. Don’t fight what’s there without an understanding of your area. Should changes to your landscape be desired and you want to do it yourself, make slow changes over time.

“To measure is to know” –start with a master plan, a survey is always best, but a tape measure and a yellow pad will also do.

Seasonal Conditions: At the time of this writing (August 2025) this season has been pretty dry. Consider getting water directly where it needs to go with drip irrigation. A how-to blog will soon be up on the website. The big box home improvement stores have a large, well-stocked selection of all the parts needed for the motivated homeowner to do it themselves. Of course, Kairos Landscaping also has an irrigation division, and is available for consultation, or, should you not want to deal with it at all, we are available for an irrigation changeover to a more efficient system. Consider making the change today for long-term savings, and more efficient use of water.

Right now is also the time to get your pressure washing done. If you want to get it done yourself, here are a few key tips. ~ When using chemicals for biological buildup control (I.E. mold and mildew) in porous surfaces (such as brick and concrete), pre-spray any surrounding foliage with water. This helps reduce the effects of shock to the plants. Also consider using regular pool chlorine post-pressure washing while the surface is still wet/moist –this allows the chemical to penetrate the surface better. ~Use a hand-held pump sprayer to apply. Don’t forget to rinse. Kairos Landscaping also has a pressure washing division, should you want it done for you.
